In this study, the authors reviewed the long-term outcomes of malunited radial fractures, finding that malunion was not necessarily associated with negative outcomes or reduced function.

Concern regarding long-term complications resulting from malunion of the radius has led many patients to be treated with open surgical techniques, rather than by closed reduction and immobilization in plaster (a treatment option that is commonly associated with malunion). Although it remains uncertain whether surgery improves functional outcomes or reduces the incidence of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (OA), this approach has been advocated in young patients with high-energy fractures.
