An Introduction from the Editor-in-Chief

Michael R Lassen, MD

The field of orthopaedics, trauma care, and sports medicine has undergone dramatic changes over the last 20 years. To name but a few – the development of metal-on-metal hip replacement prostheses, which may allow routine hip replacement in middle-aged patients; the development of autologous chondrocyte transplantation to treat or prevent arthritis in younger patients with damaged articular cartilage; internal fixation of long bone fractures in children to reduce their time in hospital; progress in minimal incision hip and knee surgery, which causes less muscle damage and thereby requires a shorter recovery period; the use of Botulinum toxin to treat muscle spasticity in children with cerebral palsy; and the evolution of image-guided knee replacement surgery. These are all new developments that are rapidly improving the provision of evidence-based orthopaedic care.
