SPORTS INJURIES

Wylde V, Blom A, Dieppe P et al.
J Bone Joint Surg Br
2008;90:920–3.

In this postal survey of patients who underwent joint surgery (primary total hip replacement, total knee replacement, hip resurfacing, unicompartmental knee replacement, or patella resurfacing), 26.4% of those who participated in a sporting activity preoperatively were unable to return to the same type of activity as a result of the surgery, usually because of pain. The authors report that after adjusting for age and gender, there was no significant difference in the rate of return to sport according to the type of surgery, but these results should be interpreted with caution given the limitations of the study.
