HIP

Capello WN, D’Antonio JA, Feinberg JR et al.
J Arthroplasty 2008;23:39–43.

In this comparison of ceramic-on-ceramic and metal-on-polyethylene hip arthroplasty bearings, ceramic components performed better, with no revision for aseptic loosening or cortical erosion required in this group.

This was a randomized, prospective, multicenter study involving 452 patients (mean age 53 years), in which ceramic-on-ceramic bearings were compared with cobalt chromium-on-polyethylene bearings in total hip arthroplasty. The hips were divided into four different groups – one control (metal-on-polyethylene) and three experimental (alumina ceramic-on-alumina ceramic). All of the groups received the same femoral stem but different acetabular shells, liners, and heads.
