This trial demonstrated that surgical treatment for prolapsed lumbar discs is preferable to non-operative treatment in terms of function and pain scores.

The Spine Patient Outcomes Research Trial (SPORT) was a prospective, concurrent, randomized, observational study conducted to assess the outcomes of surgical and non-surgical treatment for prolapsed discs over a period of 4 years. The subjects consisted of patients with symptoms of prolapsed discs over a period of 6 weeks confirmed by imaging, each meeting the previously reported SPORT criteria (Spine 2002;27:1361–72). Patients were divided into randomized and observational cohorts. Those in the randomized cohort were assigned to operative or non-operative treatment, whereas patients in the observational cohort were given a choice between thetwo options.
