Knee

Wood GC, Naudie DD, MacDonald SJ et al.Clin Orthop Relat Res 2009;467:810–7.

This well-written article from Canada presents a single-center experience of press-fit stems in revision knee arthroplasty. Although not a comparative study, it makes a strong argument for the use of press-fit stems with results comparable to those reported for diaphyseal cemented stems.

There is an increasing need for revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) as the number of primary procedures rises. Stems are used to endosteal reference, bypass bone defects, and reduce interface stresses with associated benefits of better survivorship and function. Two schools of thought exist with regard to fixation: those who believe that intramedullary cement is always necessary for improved hold and those who do not. The current authors routinely use press-fit stems and present their experience of patients operated on in 1996–2004 in this article.
