Ankle

Egol K, Pahk B, Walsh M et al.  J Orthop Trauma 2010;24:7–11.

This study demonstrates that ankle fractures requiring syndesmotic stabilization are associated with poorer functional outcomes compared with ankles not requiring stabilization.

Rotationally unstable ankle fractures frequently require evaluation and subsequent stabilization of the tibiofibular syndesmosis. In this study, the authors evaluated the functional outcomes of 502 patients prospectively enrolled in a database of ankle fractures, of whom 347 had clinical and functional data for a period >12 months. They compared 79 patients who underwent syndesmotic stabilization with 268 who did not.
