In this study, the authors demonstrate that using antibiotic-impregnated cement spacers in the first step of a two-stage hip revision procedure is not only effective in eradicating infection and compensating for tissue loss after removal of the implants, but also contributes to improvement of patients’ perioperative and postoperative daily activities.

Infection after total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a devastating complication. Antibiotic-impregnated cement spacers have been used in two-stage revision procedures with the aim of improving functional outcome and preventing recurrence. The current authors analyzed the perioperative and postoperative status of patients who underwent antibiotic-impregnated cement spacer implantation in the first step of two-stage revision.
