In this article, the authors attempt to explain the complex statistical concepts, as well as the sources of error, associated with radiostereometric analysis.

Radiostereometric analysis is an accurate technique for measuring the three-dimensional position and movement of an object in space using X-ray and digital technology. The use of radiostereometric techniques to assess the migration of orthopaedic implants in arthroplasty has become an integral part of academic research work and the development of products by industry in the field of orthopaedics. The precision of the technique has allowed a relatively small number of patients to be analyzed in early short-term follow-up, with subsequent extrapolation of the findings to longer-term outcomes of the implant types. This is based upon the early migration patterns of the implants being evaluated.
