Foot and Ankle

Henricson A, Knutson K, Lindahl J et al. Foot Ankle Surg 2010;16:61–4.

These authors report good mid-term results for one of the newer prostheses on the market for total ankle replacement.

Relatively few studies have been published reporting clinical results of total ankle arthroplasty (TAA), and the results remain inferior to those of total knee and hip arthroplasty procedures. Survival rates for TAA are in the region of 78–89% at 5 years. The Ankle Evolutive System (AES; Biomet, Nimes, France) is a third-generation implant with a monoblock tibial component and a flat distal surface allowing glide over the polyethylene insert. The talar component is biconvex and allows stable articulation with the biconcave trochlear talar implant.
