Psoriatic Arthritis

Gottlieb A, Menter A, Mendelsohn A et al.Lancet 2009;373:633–40.

Ustekinumab has previously proven to be effective in the treatment of plaque psoriasis, but determining whether it has any effect in treating psoriatic arthritis (PsA) has proven to be more difficult. In the present article, the authors report the results of a Phase II, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study of patients with PsA who were treated with ustekinumab.

Interleukin-23 (IL-23) and IL-12 amplify the activities of Th17 and Th1 cells, respectively, and both cytokines have been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of plaque-type psoriasis [1, 3,4]. These cytokines may also play a part in the pathogenesis of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) [2,3].
