Psoriatic Arthritis

Ibrahim G, Waxman R, Helliwell PS. Arthritis Rheum 2009;61:1373–8.

The recent publication of the Classification Criteria for Psoriatic Arthritis (CASPAR) has clarified the criteria that are required for diagnosing patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Previously, most studies had used a definition of concomitant arthritis and psoriasis to diagnose PsA. The current authors sought to determine the prevalence of PsA in a comunity sample of patients with psoriasis from two general practices using the new criteria compared with the assessment of their primary physician.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is the most important co-morbidity of cutaneous psoriasis and may lead to irreversible joint damage. However, there are no clear diagnostic criteria for PsA and its prevalence has not been precisely established. Several studies cite the prevalence of PsA among patients with psoriasis as approximately 10–30% [1].
