Introduction of Rivaroxaban in an Orthopedic Department

Alain Borgeat, MD, PhD

Rivaroxaban is a new antithrombotic drug that has been shown to provide superior efficacy to enoxaparin without increasing the risk of bleeding after major lower limb surgery. The introduction of this drug in a surgical department represents a paradigm change, since rivaroxaban is not administered preoperatively but postoperatively, and is not given subcutaneously but orally. These subtle changes require a complex process for its introduction in an orthopedic department to avoid severe complications caused by human error. This article presents the experience with this change in one hospital orthopedic department. Adv Venous Arterial Thromb 2011;1(1):18–24.
