Editor’s note: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is now widely used as a minimally invasive alternative to routine axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for staging breast cancer. SLNB is associated with a lower morbidity rate than ALND, and may even improve staging of the axilla. The primary aims of this systematic review and meta-analysis were to determine the axillary recurrence rate after tumor-negative SLNB with no subsequent ALND, and to determine the sensitivity of SLNB.
