Editor’s note: Since the publication of the Cochrane review on mammographic screening for breast cancer (Lancet 2001;358:1340–2), there has been continuous debate over the efficacy of screening mammography for reducing overall mortality. In the present study, the authors attempted to compute the absolute benefit of screening mammography.
