Editor’s note: Since the seminal work by Seema Khan demonstrating a survival advantage in women with metastatic breast cancer at diagnosis who were treated with surgery of the primary tumor with tumor-free margins compared with those who were not operated on (
Surgery 2002;132:620–7), many studies have reported similar findings. In the present, single-institution study, the authors investigated the survival outcomes of patients with metastatic disease treated with locoregional radiotherapy to the breast and lymph nodes, administered at doses comparable to those given to non-metastatic breast cancer patients.
