Editor’s note: The expression of tumor markers in a patient can differ between the primary and distant nodal and metastatic locations. However, routinely and repeatedly sampling tissue from metastatic sites in order to assess whether there are changes in receptor status during the course of the disease can be difficult. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) found in the peripheral blood are a potential alternative to invasive biopsies for assessing changes in receptor status.
