Lukas Schwentner’s review: In several population-based studies, it has been demonstrated that survival for patients diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer has improved over time. The aim of the present study was to determine whether survival has improved in patients with metastatic recurrence after adjuvant chemotherapy. The authors reviewed 11 Phase III adjuvant breast cancer trials conducted by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group. Patients who did not receive adjuvant chemotherapy were excluded from analysis. The trials were conducted between 1978 and 2002.
