Editor’s note: With >25 years of follow-up, it has been demonstrated that breast-conservation therapy (BCT) provides long-term outcomes equivalent to those achieved with mastectomy in the management of early-stage breast cancer. Although whole-breast irradiation (WBI) has been considered the standard adjuvant radiation therapy technique to date in these patients, concerns remain about its duration. Accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) is a relatively new technique that allows for the delivery of adjuvant radiation while shortening the treatment course to ≤1 week. Currently, ABPI can be delivered using multiple techniques, including interstitial catheters, a balloon-based catheter, and external-beam radiotherapy. With 5–10 years of follow-up, it has been demonstrated that APBI is associated with excellent clinical outcomes (Radiother Oncol 2011;100:210–4, Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2011;79:808–17).
