Oral bisphosphonates and risk of cancer of oesophagus, stomach and colorectum: case-control analysis within a UK primary cohort
Green J, Czanner G, Reeves G et al.
Editor's note: Oral bisphosphonates are used to treat osteoporosis, which is now increasingly recognized as a problem in patients with conditions such as celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Case reports have described an association between oral bisphosphonates and esophageal cancer. Using the UK General Practice Research Database (GPRD), the current authors sought to examine the possible association between the use of oral bisphosphonates and three different gastrointestinal (GI) cancers: esophageal, gastric, and colorectal.
