The factors associated with the development of melasma include exposure to ultraviolet light; genetic predisposition; and hormonal factors including pregnancy, the oral contraceptive pill, and hormone replacement therapy. Melasma is generally seen more frequently in women and is more common in black, Asian, and Latino populations. It is a cosmetic problem and can affect quality of life.
