Practical Ways to Improve Patients’ Use of their Medications

Jenna L O’Neill, MD1 and Steven R Feldman, MD, PhD1–3

Patients suffering from chronic inflammatory skin conditions often require medical therapy for extended periods of time. Poor adherence is an important factor to consider in patients who do not improve with conventional therapies for chronic skin conditions. Adherence to topical medications is particularly poor, as patients may perceive these treatments as inconvenient, uncomfortable, or ineffective [1,2]. Prescriptions for many commonly prescribed outpatient medications are often not even filled [3]. Medication non-adherence is extremely common and has a large impact on health and healthcare expenditures [4,5].
