A single night of partial sleep deprivation induces insulin resistance in multiple metabolic pathways in healthy subjects

Shortened sleep duration has been associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in epidemiological studies (Diabetes Care 2003;26:380–4, Diabetes Care 2006;29:657–61). Furthermore, sleep apnea, which is also associated with sleep disturbance, has been associated with insulin resistance and components of the metabolic syndrome, independently of body weight (Lancet 1999;354:1435–9, J Appl Physiol 2005;99:2008–19). The current study was designed to test the hypothesis that sleep deprivation leads to a reduction in insulin sensitivity in healthy individuals.
