Editor’s note: Over the past few years much of the direction of primary care diabetes management has been focused on achieving set target levels for metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors. The present Dutch study assessed decisions to change drug treatments based on elevated risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and glycemia levels in >3000 type 2 diabetes patients during a period of 1 year. Target levels followed Dutch national guidelines; namely, blood pressure ≥140/85 mmHg, cholesterol ≥5 mmol/L, and glycated hemoglobin ≥7%.
