Editor’s note: This is an interesting and somewhat unusual article that is based on the ADDITION (Anglo–Danish–Dutch Study of Intensive Treatment in People with Screen-Detected Diabetes in Primary Care) trial (Int J Obes Relat Metab Disord 2000;24:S6–11). Population-based screening for this trial took place in three European countries and this report describes the data from the Cambridge, UK, arm. A group of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (n=867) patients aged 40–69 years were identified. At diagnosis, the investigators quantified the 10-year cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in the 81% of patients without previous CVD using the UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) and Framingham risk engines, and calculated how much these risks could be reduced by intensive CVD therapy.
