Editor’s note: In this article, the mechanisms and details relating to the improvement in glucose metabolism seen after bariatric surgery are explored. The study involved nine morbidly obese type 2 diabetes patients with a mean body mass index (BMI) of 51.7 kg/m2, who underwent biliopancreatic diversion, as well as six sex- and age-matched healthy controls with a mean BMI of 24.6 kg/m2. Insulin sensitivity and β cell function were assessed by means of intravenous (IVGTT) or oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT) before and 1 month after surgery in all patients.
