The Association Between Schizophrenia and Hyperglycemia: A Synopsis of Recent Data

Martin Buysschaert

Schizophrenia is a chronic, debilitating, psychotic mental disorder that affects approximately 1% of people worldwide [1]. Disturbances in glucose metabolism have repeatedly been observed in patients with schizophrenia or related schizoaffective disorders, as reported by a large number of clinical studies [2–5]. In such populations, the overall prevalence of diabetes is generally considered to be two to four times higher than in the general population [2]. The interaction between schizophrenia and hyperglycemia is complex and the reason(s) for the morbid association of these two conditions remains controversial.
