Intrauterine Programming of Diabetes

Chittaranjan S Yajnik, MD and Urmila S Deshmukh, MD

There is an escalating epidemic of obesity and diabetes worldwide; the International Diabetes Federation estimates that 245 million people aged 20–79 years worldwide have diabetes mellitus, 70% of whom live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) [1]. The diabetes epidemic is likely to affect the health and the economy of the LMICs.
