Editor’s note: Much has been made of the studies over recent years in which various molecular techniques (or in some case therapies with agents such as glucagon-like peptide-1) have been shown to cause increases in
β-cell mass in experimental animals with diabetes. While this is obviously an exciting prospect, it remains to be demonstrated to be a transferrable observation in humans. These two reports perhaps give an explanation for that failure of the transference of such data to humans [1,2].
