Editor’s note: Although the effects of exercise are generally considered to be positive for almost all individuals, for those using insulin to treat diabetes there is an associated risk of hypoglycemia. The risk of hypoglycemia associated with short-acting insulin can be minimized by delaying exercise until after the insulin has been absorbed; however, basal insulin is by definition required for 24 h per day. Therefore, the authors of this study sought to determine whether one type of basal insulin is associated with a greater risk of hypoglycemia during exercise compared with others.
