Editor’s note: The diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is typically based on the perception of risk for microvascular complications, predominantly retinopathy. It is generally perceived that the risk of retinopathy involves a combination of glycemic experience and genetic predisposition. These two recently published articles add interesting insight to this debate.
