Editor’s note: The recent JUPITER (Justification for the Use of Statins in Prevention: an Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin) study found that rosuvastatin was associated with an increase in the development of new diabetes (
N Engl J Med 2008;359:2195–207). This prompted the current authors to conduct a meta-analysis of six statin trials to investigate this association. When the results of all studies were combined, a slight but non-significant increase in the incidence of diabetes (risk ratio [RR] 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.93–1.25) was observed with statin therapy compared with placebo.
