Editor’s note: We are familiar with the fact that there are often multiple publications from large multicenter trials using the study population as a large epidemiological database for a prospective, cohort study. This publication from the ADVANCE (Action in Diabetes and Vascular disease: Preterax and Diamicron-Modified-Release Controlled Evaluation) trial, demonstrates that baseline waist-to-hip ratio was a better predictor of subsequent cardiovascular events than measurement of waist circumference or body mass index. Unfortunately, the article is difficult to read, as much of it is presented in statistical language. A more clinical approach would have been much more helpful for a diabetes readership.
