Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Review

Eran Hadar, MD and Moshe Hod, MD

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as carbohydrate intolerance of variable severity, with onset or first recognition occurring during pregnancy [1]. It is associated with a higher rate of adverse pregnancy outcomes and various neonatal complications. The definition of GDM does not encompass the mode of treatment nor does it recognize undiagnosed pre-gestational glucose intolerance.
