Editor’s note: It is well established that hypoglycemia is the major barrier to tight glycemic control in people with type 1 diabetes. Fear of hypoglycemia acts as a barrier in people with type 1 diabetes as they often let their blood glucose levels run higher than normal to reduce their risk of hypoglycemia. Indeed, such behavior is often encouraged by diabetes healthcare professionals in individuals who live alone and are prone to severe hypoglycemia. However, there is a balance to be struck and some patients with type 1 diabetes seem to have a disproportionate fear of hypoglycemia that may lead them to maintain dangerously high blood glucose levels.
