Editor’s note: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) is a recently described entity that may be increasing in incidence. Indeed, it is certainly becoming more frequently recognized. However, given the absence of population studies on esophageal pathology, the true incidence of the condition is not known. Several years ago the “Kalixanda Study” was established by recruiting a representative sample of the Swedish population from two communities for endoscopy and biopsy. This study has proven to be invaluable in investigating the incidence and associated features of upper gastrointestinal diseases and their symptoms. The authors of the current article report on the prevalence of EE and eosinophilic infiltration in this population.
