Editor’s note: Functional esophageal chest pain is a difficult problem to manage clinically. Visceral hypersensitivity is believed to underlie the disorder, but the neurohormonal modulators responsible for it are elusive, psychological factors are often implicated, and well-conducted therapeutic studies in this area are few and far between. For these reasons, the current authors should be congratulated for conducting a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of esophageal chest pain and for demonstrating results that might be clinically useful.
