 Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2009;29:397–408.

Editor’s note: The current article details an interesting study in which 59 patients with cirrhosis who had variceal bleeding were randomized to receive either ligation and β-blockers (nadolol; group 1) or nadolol and isosorbide mononitrate (group 2). Group 2 were monitored by hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurement, and if a non-hemodynamic response was found, isosorbide mononitrate was substituted with prazosin.
