Editor’s note: Several studies in recent years have demonstrated that the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to peptic ulcer disease is helpful in improving outcomes when combined with endoscopic hemostasis alone (
Mayo Clinic Proceedings 2007;82:286–96). However, in placebo-controlled trials this advantage of PPIs has mainly been evident in studies from Southeast Asia, leading to speculation that the benefit may not apply to patients elsewhere (
Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2005;21:1055–61).
