Epidemology

Crooks C, Card T, West J.

Nottingham City Hospital, Nottingham, UK.

 Gastroenterology 2011;141:62–70.

Editor’s note: This is a large epidemiological survey on upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the UK. The authors used a case–control study design to analyze data from all adults admitted to any National Health Service hospital in the UK. All adults admitted from 1999 to 2007 (n=516 153) were identified by the Hospital Episodes Statistics database, via the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) coding system list, which denotes different sources of bleeding. Subsequent readmissions can be traced, including those for further gastrointestinal bleeding.
