Editor’s note: In this article, the authors described their experience of using wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) in 24 patients. Of these subjects, 16 had chronic refractory pouchitis (CRP) following colectomy and ileo-anal pouch surgery for ulcerative colitis; the remaining eight subjects, who had histologically normal ileal pouches, acted as controls. In the experimental group, pouchitis was confirmed clinically, endoscopically, and histologically. Prior to WCE, all participants underwent small bowel radiology, which was normal in the majority of cases. The surgical and clinical details of all subjects were reviewed to exclude possible cases of Crohn’s disease, of which there were none.
