Editor’s note: As the rates of obesity and extreme obesity continue to climb, more data have become available regarding the relationship between adverse pregnancy outcome and increasing weight. The present review article describes the basic nutritional and surgical alterations of the most commonly performed bariatric procedures to assist in the appropriate counseling and management of extremely obese women of childbearing age, both before and after bariatric surgery. Although the reports of pregnancy outcomes following bariatric surgery have generally been favorable, reports on postoperative pregnancy have been limited and have not resulted in the creation of a treatment plan that is specific to the needs of women who have undergone this surgical procedure.
