Editor’s note: C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase reactant; its levels increase in response to tissue injury and other inflammatory stimuli. Clinicians frequently use serum CRP concentrations to determine the degree of possible infective or inflammatory morbidities in pregnancy. It can also be used as a marker for infections and situations such as preterm premature rupture of membranes, where morbidity can be substantial to both mother and baby. Conservative management is only practiced when infection is unlikely.
