Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is primarily characterized by generalized pruritus. Pruritus is a symptom that is often painful for the mother, but the occurrence of a cholestasis during the pregnancy can represent a serious risk for the fetus. If the patient has no history of liver disease, cholestasis is most likely to be an ICP (i.e. a cholestasis related to pregnancy). In some cases, cholestasis can be due to an intercurrent liver disease or the aggravation of a previously unknown chronic liver disease.
