Editor’s note: Both the immunotherapy agent interferon-
α (IFN-
α) and the molecular targeted agent sorafenib have demonstrated antitumoral activity in advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). IFN-
α is considered a therapeutic option for low-risk metastatic RCC (mRCC) according to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center predictive model (
J Urol 2000;163:408–17). Sorafenib has been shown to improve progression-free survival (PFS) compared with placebo in patients with mRCC resistant to a cytokine regimen (
N Engl J Med 2007;356:125–34).
