Editor’s note: This interesting article reviews the best management of targeted therapies in advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Over the past few years, several clinical prospective trials have demonstrated a significant improvement in the clinical outcome of metastatic RCC with the use of anti-angiogenic agents. All targeted therapies have a cytostatic effect and, thus, optimal antitumoral activity requires chronic exposure to the drug. Indeed, it is well known that there is a direct correlation between the percentage of tumor growth control and the level of drug exposure (
Eur J Cancer 2007;5(Suppl.):299. Abstract 4.505). Thus, compliance with the best schedule for any particular drug is essential. Accordingly, appropriate management of the adverse events reported with these new therapies is necessary in order to maintain a good quality of life (QoL) for the patient.
