Editor’s note: Despite recent advances in the treatment of renal cell carcinaoma (RCC), the mortality among patients with this disease is still high. Approximately one-third of patients who undergo surgery for localized kidney cancer subsequently relapse with metastatic disease (
BJU Int 1999;84:405–11,
Curr Urol Rep 2005;6:7–18). Thus, there is an urgent need for better prognostication methods to forecast outcomes in RCC. This article describes the development of a scoring model to predict the outcomes in patients with clear-cell RCC, based on levels of the biomarkers B7 H1, survivin, and KI-67.
