Editor’s note: In recent years, the following six antiangiogenic drugs have been approved for the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC): sunitinib, sorafenib, temsirolimus, everolimus, pazopanib, and bevacizumab (in combination with interferon-
α [IFN-
α]). These medications have shown better improved tumor growth control and longer progression-free survival (PFS) in comparison with previously available agents. However, in Phase III, registrative trials (and also in Phase II trials and expanded access programs), a complete response in patients with mRCC has not been commonly reported with antiangiogenic therapies. These data suggest that we should consider the potential role of combination treatments in significantly improving the overall survival of patients with mRCC. The current authors review clinical data on combination therapies in this setting.
