Editor’s note: Hyponatremia (low serum sodium) is common among hospital inpatients and is associated with a poor outcome in a number of medical and malignant conditions. Recently, a low serum sodium level has been found to be associated with poor disease-free and overall survival (OS) after nephrectomy in patients with localized renal cell carcinoma (RCC;
Clin Cancer Res 2008;14:1775–81). The current authors investigated the prognostic effect of serum sodium in a cohort of120 patients with metastatic RCC (mRCC) who were treated with low-dose interleukin-2 and interferon-
α. The results were then validated in a second cohort of 120 patients with mRCC.
