Bortezomib induces apoptosis in primitive chronic myeloid leukemia cells including LTC-IC and NOD/SCID repopulating cells.

Heaney NB, Pellicano F, Zhang B et al.

Editor’s note: The stem/progenitor cells in the bone marrow of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) are selectively resistant to the cytotoxic effect of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and are likely to be the site of development of drug resistance mutations. Identification of novel agents that may enhance the ability of TKIs to eradicate these cancer stem cells is therefore of considerable interest.
